O thou who art advancing towards the Kingdom of Abha:

Be thankful that thou art inebriated with this Cup of the Love of God, hast partaken of the Graces of the Supreme Concourses, and art quickened with the Fragrances of Holiness.

Night and day lament and implore with the utmost supplication and humility, before the Threshold of the Presence of the One God that thou mayest be strengthened to guide people, with all steadfastness on this path and take the plenteous share from this most Great Sea.

The hosts of the Kingdom will assist (thee) and the Heavenly Armies will protect and defend thee. Wherefore seek bounties as much as thou canst.

Baha’o’llah is upon him.

O thou who art supplicating unto God:

Verily I mention thee always and shall never forget thee forever and forever. I beseech God to make thee a sign of guidance among the people, and a lamp of dazzling light in that extensive and large city, so that pure and good souls may be illumined by the light of the knowledge of God, and thus serve the Merciful Threshold of showing earnest desire for love, peace, affinity and harmony with the people of all regions. Verily the Spirit through which the temple of the contingent world would be quickened in this time is indeed the founder of peace, the Spirit of affinity, and the light of love. This is that whereby this being of existence would evolve and develop, and the world of humanity be adorned with the raiments of glory and honor. Therefore it is incumbent upon thee to kindle thyself with the Fire of the Love of God in order that thy words may have an effect in the hearts which are like as of hard stone.

Upon thee is salutation and praise.

He is God:

O thou young incomparable tree of the Rose-Garden of the Love of God:

Thank thou God that thou art planted beside this heavenly stream, has been favored with the inexhaustible outpouring, hast been trained and developed by the rain of the Cloud of the Kingdom of God, and hast brought fruit under the care of the Divine Gardener. Now it is the time to cast the shade, and produce delicious fruits and impart sweetness to the palate of the Spiritual ones. Exert with heart and soul. Do not rest one moment, neither do thou seek after composure. Give thou to others the Glad-tidings of the Kingdom, and announce to them the manifestation of the Signs of the Realm of Might! This is from the Bounty of God. He bestoweth to whomsoever He willeth. Verily God is the Possessor of Great Gifts.

He is God:

O thou who art approaching toward God:

Verily I have received thy letter and my heart was dilated by the contents for thy expression for it indicated the illumination of thy heart, the spirituality of thy soul, the detachment from all the grades of this nether world; and they yearning after the effulgences of the realm of Might.

By the Glory of my Lord, I declare; Verily the Splendors of Divinity are continually descending upon the pure, enlightened souls, and the Outpouring of the Kingdom falls tumultuously, like unto torrents, upon the FAVORED REALITITES from the rains of the Providence of thy Lord the Merciful, the Clement.

Cast behind every single thought and idea, and attach thyself to the Commemoration of thy Master; the Ancient. Be thou soaring in the Kingdom of God, the Mighty; the Beneficent. Live thou in Paris until the Fragrance of the Love of God may emanate from thee in the college wherein thou art studying sciences, and unfurl thou the Standard of Universal Peace, Reconciliation, Agreement, and Security among all men. Rejoice thou by the Bounty of thy Lord which has encompassed the whole existence and sing and warble with the most wonderful melody in the Rose-garden of knowledge. Verily the Lord, the Beneficent will confirm thee in every moment and second, and will empower thee with such power that the columns of warfare and bloodshed shall shake, and the foundation of peace and harmony shall arise.

He is God:

O thou who art firm in the Covenant of God:

Mayest thou enjoy this cup which is overflowing with the pure Wine of the Love of God.

Blessed thou art for turning thy face to the Kingdom of God.

Glad Tidings unto thee for that by reason of which thou has become an acceptable Servant before God.

Verily I have read thy brilliant letter and praised God for He hath made the cup of thy heart filled with the Pure Wine of His Love, and hath chosen thee to enter the Kingdom of His Guidance.

Now as to what thou askest concerning giving up the Scientific attainment in Paris for the sake of confining thy days to the delivery of this Truth, it is indeed acceptable and beloved, but if thou acquire both it would be better and more perfect, because in this new century the attainment of Science, arts, and Belle Lettres whether Divine or worldly, material or Spiritual, is a matter which is incumbent upon us to accomplish. Therefore never deny the Spiritual things to the material, rather both are incumbent upon thee. Nevertheless at the time when thou art working for such a scientific attainment, thou must be controlled by the attraction of the Love of thy Glorious Lord, and reminiscent of mentioning His Splendid Name. This being the case thou must attain the art thou art studying to its perfection.

I implore God to assist thee in all cases and aspects, and perfume thy nostrils with the Holy Fragrances during all times.

Be tranquil through My Love unto thee and rejoice at my compassion upon thee for I shall never forget thee.

As to the tribute thou has sent, we have accepted it as a treasure, because it was presented by thee with all love and great sincerity; and we shall use it in building the Holy Tomb that thy name may become immortal forever and ever.

He is El-Abha.

O thou who art directed to the Light of Guidance.

In this moment the heart of Abdu’l-Baha is rejoiced at thy remembrance, and He is writing an answer to (thy) letter so that thou mayest be so moved by the breeze of the Love of God that thou mayest become the envy of the Cypress and the rose-garden and cause joy, yearning, longing and ecstasy to the friends.

In this Great Dispensation, Art (Profession) is identical with an act of worship, and this is a clear text of the “Blessed Perfection”. Therefore extreme effort should be made in the art, and this will not prevent the teaching of the people in that region (i.e. teaching them this Truth). Nay rather each should assist the other in art and Guidance. For instance, when the studying of art is with the intention of obeying the Command of God, this study will certainly be done easily, and great progress will soon be made (therein). And when others discover the fragrance of Spirituality in the action itself, the same will cause their awakening. Likewise, managing art with propriety will become the means of sociability and affinity, and sociability and affinity themselves tend to guide others (to the Truth).

Satisfy thy revered father and seek his pleasure, so that he may consider that thou observes his obedience more than ever. Practice the utmost love and affection.

I supplicate and beseech the Threshold of Oneness that thou mayest be confirmed and assisted.

He is God:

O thou who art rejoiced by the Divine Glad tidings.

Verily I have received thy last letter and thanked God that thou didst reach Paris protected and guarded (by him). Thank thou God that He assisted thee to behold the brilliant faces of the believers of God and favored thee to meet them in America. For verily beholding those shining countenances is a Divine gift; by it the hearts are dilated, the souls are rejoiced and the spirits are attracted toward the Supreme Concourse.

Do not lament over the departure of my dearly beloved Breakwell, For verily he has ascended to the Luminous Rose-Garden in the Abha Kingdom, near the Mercy of his Lord, the Almighty, and is crying out with the loudest voice: “O that my people knew how my Lord hath forgiven me and made me one of those who have attained (to the meeting with God”).

O Breakwell, My Beloved! Where is thy beautiful countenance and where is thy eloquent tongue? Where is thy radiant brow and where is thy brilliant face?

O Breakwell, My Beloved! Where is thy enkindlement with the Fire of the Love of God, and where is thy attraction to the Fragrance of God? Where is thy utterance for the glorification of God, and where is thy rising in the service of God?

O My Dear, O Breakwell! Where are thy bright eyes, and where are thy smiling lips? Where are thy gentle cheeks, and where is thy graceful stature?

O My Dear, O Breakwell! Verily thou has abandoned this transitory world and soared upward to the Kingdom, hast attained to the Grace of the Invisible realm, and sacrificed thyself to the Threshold of the Lord of Might!

O My adored one, O Breakwell! Verily thou hast left behind this physical lamp, this human glass, these earthly elements, and this worldly enjoyment.

O My adored one, O Breakwell! Then thou hast ignited in the Glass of the Supreme Concourse, a light, hast entered in the Paradise of Abha, art protected under the shade of the Blessed Tree, and hast attained to the Meeting (of the True One) in the Abode of Paradise!

O My dearly-beloved, O Breakwell! Thou hast been a Divine bird, and forsaking thy earthly nest, thou hast soared toward the Holy Rose-Gardens of the Divine Kingdom and obtained a luminous station there!

O My dearly-beloved, O Breakwell! Verily thou art like unto the birds, chanting the verses of thy Lord, the Forgiving for thou wert a thankful servant, therefore thou hast entered (in the Realm Beyond) with joy and happiness.

O My beloved, O Breakwell! Verily thy Lord has chosen thee for His Love, guided thee to the Court of His Holiness, caused thee to enter into Ridvan of His Association, and granted thee to behold His Beauty!

O My Beloved, O Breakwell! Verily thou hast attained to the Eternal Life, Never-ending Bounty, Beatific Bliss, and Immeasurable Providence.

O My beloved, O Breakwell! Thou has become a Star in the Most Exalted Horizon, a lamp among the Angels of Heaven, a living Spirit in the Supreme World, and art established upon the throne of Immortality!

O my adored one, O my Breakwell! I mention thy name continually, I never forget thee, I pray for thee day and night, and I see thee clearly and manifestly, O my adored one, O Breakwell!

Convey my greeting to the attracted maid-servant of God, Madam Jackson and announce to her the Bounty of God and tell her: “Do not make haste, neither be thou restless. Soon verily all the problems shall be solved (literally ever knot shall be loosened) and God shall unfold a spacious door and the purpose shall be attained.”

Concerning thy question whether all the souls enjoy Eternal Life. Know thou those souls partake of the Eternal Life in whom the Spirit of Life is breathed from the Presence of God; and all beside them are dead –without Life. As Christ has explained (this Matter) in the texts of the Gospel. Any person whose insight is opened by God sees the souls in their stations after the disintegration of their bodies. Verily, they are living and are subsisting before their Lord, and He sees also the dead souls submerged in the gulfs of mortality. Then know thou verily all the souls are created according to the Nature of God, and all are in the state of (unconscious) purity at the time of their births. But afterwards they differ from one another, in so far as they acquire excellencies or defects. Nevertheless, the creatures have different degrees in existence, in so far as the creation goes, for capacities are different, in so far as the creation goes, for capacities are different, but all of them are good and pure (in their essence) then afterward they are polluted and defiled. Although there are different states of creation, yet all of them are beneficial. Glance thou over the temple of man, its members and its parts. Among them are eye and ear, nose and mouth, hands and fingers. Notwithstanding the difference between these organs, all of them are useful in their proper spheres, but if one of them is out of order, there is need of a remedy, and if the medicine does not heal them the amputation of that member becomes necessary.

Verily I beseech God to make thee confirmed under all circumstance. Do not become despondent, neither be thou sad. Ere long thy Lord shall make thee a sign of guidance among mankind.

O thou dear and honorable:

I received thy last letter through his honor, Antoun Effendi, and its contents imparted to me spiritual joy, for it indicated the high and good friendship between thee, and the respectfully maid-servant of God, Edith Theodora MacKaye. I supplicate God to increase at every moment and second your faith, assurance, steadfastness, and your knowledge, and likewise to create Spiritual friendship and Celestial Love among the friends, in order that they may become a unit host and enlisted soldiers (of the Kingdom of God) with accomplishment, skillfulness, solidarity, fellowship, and unison.

Verily, by this their breasts will become dilated, and their names exalted, their faces illumined, their host confirmed, and their progress, illumination, insight, knowledge, spirituality, fragrance, attraction, enkindlement, sanctity and purity promulgated.

Convey my greeting to Miss Barrett Smith and say to her: “Verily the teachings which flowed from the lips of His Highness Christ were spiritual, celestial, heavenly and the cause of the eternal life, therefore it is explained heavenly Food, and Divine Tale. But the philosophers who were the greatest sages of the world at that time could not realize the Power of the Teachings of Christ, and these very philosophers were veiled from the Spirit of Christ, and they did not acknowledge His instructions. For their imaginations did not correspond with the apprehensions of their Intellects. O what a remorse is their lot, by losing this Most Great Cause. Consequently, the teachings of Baha shall assuredly breathe the spirit of Peace, the love of God, and divine compassion in the hearts of men. These universal results will become clear to those who cling to them (teachings) after experience. As to thee, consider profoundly these teachings in order that thou mayst apprehend their realities. Upon thee be greeting and praise.

O my dear Mr. Remey! I beseech God to Grant thee the power of Knowledge and understanding so that thou mayst fathom the mysteries of the teachings descended from the presence of the Glorious Lord. Upon thee be greeting and praise.

O thou spiritual son!

Verily I have received thy letter dated November 14, 1902, and its contents were known. I supplicate God to open to thee a Way, and prepare for thee, and guide thee in thy affair.

But concerning thy marriage with the maid-servant of God, Edith Theodora MacKaye, do not be in a hurry. Deliberation and patience is necessary until her mother would give her consent, and your father and mother also acquiesce. This is firmness. Verily this is better for thee under all circumstances! Verily thy Lord is Gracious to His servants, and He facilitates ere long every straight Cause. But thou must submit to and rely upon God under all conditions, and He will bestow upon thee that which is conducive to thy well-being. Verily He is Merciful and Compassionate. For how many an affair was involved in difficulty and then was straightened, and how many a problem was solved by the permission of God.

Be thou not grieved, neither be thou sad. Finish thy studies in sciences, and then turn thy face unto God, asking from him help and protection under all conditions.

Convey greetings to the dear Maid-servant of God, Edith Theodora.

I beg of God that thou wilt become assisted and confirmed under all circumstances; to find the ease of the spirit and the happiness of consciousness; to enter under the Shadow of the Tree of Life, and to perfume the nostrils from the fragrances of the Holy Rose-Garden; and to illumine the heart with the Lights of the Mercy of Guidance.

Through the Grace of His Highness the almighty and all affairs become easy and feasible. The sum of 250 francs that thou hast forwarded has reached [me]. Upon thee be greeting and praise.

O thou who art attracted by the Fire of the Love of God.

I am cognizant of all you have written in your letters to fatten the pleasure of God is the most important thing. Thank God you are content with the will of God and are attach by heart to His divine wishes, and as you are thus all of your wishes will be granted to you.

Relative to your going to America you must observe the wishes of your parents, and in the meantime endeavor to diffuse the breath of God and satisfy those who are thirsty for the fountain of the Knowledge of God, by giving them the heavenly water and merciful rain.

Give my greetings to Madame Scaramucci and say to her: “If you desire to soften the hearts and bring your friends under the Shadow of the tree of Life, show forth firmness and integrity day by day, increase thy sincerity and severance until by the power of the Truth you will soften and subdue the hearts and awaken the souls of the heedless!”

Also give my spiritual greeting to Mr. and Mrs. Hopper and say to them, “May your little daughter be a blessing to you.”

O my dear Remey, endure and be patient and by patience you will attain to your desire.

O thou sincere servant of God

Be not sad or sorrowful over what has occurred. What has transpired is for the best and in it is a secret wisdom concealed, which erelong will become manifest.

Turn thou to the Kingdom of Abha and supplicate to the Highest Concourse. This aid and Mercy of God encompasses all, and His divine Bounty is all sufficient. Verily something will soon occur for that kind friend (i.e. yourself) which will bring all happiness, joy, pleasure and contentment in the Kingdom of God!

Regarding those whose names you have written I ask aid and assistance for them from God, especially Maurice Rodieux. I beseech at the Threshold of the Oneness of God to shower upon him blessings and open for him the Door of Guidance bestowing upon his heart and heavenly Light. Upon thee be greetings and praise. O thou who art firm in the Covenant

Thank thou God, for that thou art assisted to establish a spiritual meeting in that city. That assembly is the Rose-Garden of the Love of God, and that meeting is the gathering place of the beloved of God. If it continues and endures it is the first assembly of the world and is the greatest society of mankind. Exert thyself with all heart and soul so that it may continue and be stable and constant, until blessed results may ensue therefrom. For without firmness and steadfastness no matter shall prove effective in the existence.

Some of the friends organized meetings for teaching in the neighborhood of that region, but owing to lack of steadfastness, those meetings scattered with great rapidity. I hope that thy spiritual meeting may become continual, and cause the spread of the Lights. Upon thee be greeting and praise.

He is God:

O thou my dear friend:

I am now viewing the flowers in the little garden and remembering your rose-like face. This material rose although beautiful and fragrant, yet it cannot be compared with the beauty of the friends. Great is the difference between this fragrance and that of the friends, between the scent of this rose and the fragrance of the love of God. That face of Him which attracts the hearts, is far more beautiful and better than this rose; with that beauty is accompanied illumination.

Thy gift is (much appreciated) and very acceptable. I was made very happy, and I prayed for thee that thou mayest appreciate the contents and significance of it.

Indeed thou hast served in Washington, with no will save the will of God in view, and thou hast made me happy and attained my pleasure.

Hold the Spiritual meeting at the stated times, and be thou its candles; giving (the friends) such happiness and joy through the glad-tidings of God as will make them joyful and full of ecstasy.

Give them all my longing greetings. Surely manifest the utmost of love and goodness to the Baltimore friends, and organize there a Spiritual meeting.

Upon him be Baha’u’llah El Abha.

He is God:

(Prayer)

O God grant Washington happiness and peace. Illuminate that land with the light of the faces of the friends, make it a paradise of glory, let it become an envy of the green gardens of the earth, help the friends, increase the number, make their hearts sources of inspiration and the souls dawnings of light. Thus mayst that city become a beautiful paradise and fragrant with the fragrance of Musk.

O thou who are firm in the Covenant. Great joy was obtained in learning of the harmony and love of the friends. Communication with the friends of various parts, is one of the greatest means of spreading the fragrances.

The place adjoining Washington where during the summer season the maid-servant of God, Mrs. Barnitz shall go, if it will not cause any disturbance, and does not become a means of talk among (people) the gathering of some of the friends there will be favorable.

We must be considerate lest it may cause “sensation” among the people, for some people are weak and should be treated very gently. However the gathering of some of the friends there would be a cause of enkindling the Fire of God and the organization of a Baha’i meeting will be harmless.

Every week two or three of the Washington friends should go to Baltimore and endeavor to help and encourage the friends there.

As to the seven qualifications of which you have asked as follows:

Knowledge: More must attain the Knowledge of God.
Faith.
Steadfastness.
Truthfulness: Truthfulness is the foundation of all the virtues of the world of humanity. Without Truthfulness progress and success in all the worlds of God are impossible for a soul. This Holy attribute when well established in man – All the Divine qualities will also be realized.
Faithfulness. And this is one of the Greatest Divine attainments.
Fidelity. This is also a beautiful trait of the heavenly man.
Evanescence and humility. That is to say man must become evanescent in God: – must forget his own selfish conditions that he may thus arise to the station of sacrifice. It should be to such a degree that if he sleep it should not be for pleasure but to rest the body in order to do better, to speak better, to explain more beautifully, to serve the servants of God and to prove his truth. When he remains awake he should seek to be attentive, serve the cause of God and sacrifice his own stations for those of God. When he attains to this station the confirmations of the Holy Spirit will surely reach him and man with this power can withstand all who inhabit the earth.

In regard to children, you have written that it is decided to train them in the teachings of God from childhood. This thought is very acceptable.

Give greetings and praise to all the friends of God and His Maid-servants.

(Prayer)

O God make this youth illumined and this weak one strong. Bestow upon him knowledge and give unto him an added strength at every dawn. Thus may he be protected and sheltered from every sin in thy protection, to serve thy cause, to guide those led astray, to lead those who are poor (weak), to free those who are in captivity (bondage) to awaken those who are in lethargy and be happy with Thy remembrance and thought.

Thou art the Powerful, the Wise.

Your letter sent through the maid-servant d’Astre, has been received. You had written concerning the changing of names: – A name has no importance, for a name must needs have a bearer (deserving a high name). That is to say, consider (peoples) morals and character, then consider the person himself, and be attentive (to detect) one’s manner and conduct and consider their faith and assurance. If a person is illuminated with the Light of the Love of God, he is (like unto) the Morning Star, even though his name be dark, if he is a captive in the darkness of error, he is gloomy even though his name be that of a Shining Star. Consequently, be you intent that you may make your face illumined with the Light of the Love of God. – – through the Divine Assistance and Favor. This attribute will make thee independent in every name.

Convey my loving greetings to all the friends of God.

HE IS GOD!

O thou seeker of the Kingdom!

Thy letter written on the 20^th of July was received. Its contents became evident. Thou hast written concerning Baltimore; this caused me great joy.

The revered maid servant of God Miss Pollock has undergone great troubles. Praise be to God that she has arisen and is confirmed to serve the (Kingdom of God.)

I hope that Mr. and Mrs. Woodward will become the cause of spreading the teachings and organizing gathering-places.

The news of Camp Mineola brought me utmost joy and fragrance. I pray to God that the power of the word of God may become more evident and manifest day by day in those regions.

Convey my respectful greeting to the maid servant of God, Mrs. Florence Mason Brown (of Pompey, New York), likewise to Miss Thedora Brown. I supplicate in their behalf that God may bestow upon them heavenly illumination.

Another letter which was written on the 20^th of August was received too. Thou hast expressed sorrow and grief concerning the events of the Holy Land, on the contrary (these events must cause) joy, happiness and exultation; for this is the day of trial and the occasion for the manifestation of the secrets of soul and heart. Have utmost joy about the incidents in the Holy Land and do not consider from any other view-point. For the deluge of affliction is surrounding always the Holy Land; and the sincere servant of the True one is like unto the enkindled Lamp, which the adverse winds blow around it. Therefore you must engage in your own occupation, familiar in spreading the Fragrance of God. For instance if you receive the news that the Holy Land is entirely changed, you must not relax at all; nay rather you must become firmer, more steadfast, more attracted and more engaged in the service of the Kingdom.

The Tablet that you have asked for the maid servant of God, Miss Edith Grosvenor was written and is enclosed.

What thou hast written was read, and its contents became known. In reality, Blessed Days are coming; it is the time for the service of the Kingdom and the period of spreading the Divine Call. I hope that thou, and all the friends will occupy their times in the service of the Kingdom, at this moment when Abdu’l-Baha is involved in the greatest danger, so that his heart may become gladdened and that you may become strengthened by the Word of God, causing also the strength of others.

Concerning thy presence in the Land of Desire, for the present, postpone (this matter) for some other time, until the arrival of summer, and the passing of frosty weather. At that time it will be acted according to the circumstances.

The petition concerning Unity and Harmony signed by the Majority of the believers of God was received. We have written a detailed answer for it, and it will be forwarded. This letter which was signed by the majority of friends brought me great, great joy.

The book, that you have written, you will send after its translation, it will be read.

Each letter that you receive from Me, and in the end there is the command for its spreading. You ought to publish that letter and circulate it.

Endeavor so far as thou art able to create unity, harmony and loving kindness among the Believers of God.

The enclosed letter which was written by Miss Mary L. Noble, and an answer is written, and you find it here.

Your last letter was received and its contents brought joy. Thank thou God, for thou art engaged in serving the word of God and spending the time with the friends of God. If thou somewhat regard thy father and mother, too, so that they may be somewhat pleased – – this will be the cause of pleasure to me. Father and mother are worthy of esteem, and it is necessary (to secure) their good pleasure; but this on condition that they may not prevent one from nearness to the Threshold of the Almighty, and may not withhold one from walking in the path of the Kingdom. Nay rather thy (parents) should encourage and inspire one (to walk in God’s paths.)

As to living (or conduct) in accord with the book of Akdas: – We have spoken of this to his honor Mr. MacNutt; for there is freedom in Those Lands, and there are no obstacles. Likewise, “The Ishrakat”, “Tarazat” and “Tajalliat” (names of some important tablets of Baha’u’llah) must be translated and published and spread among the friends. But whatever writings and articles which the believers may write for the spread of the Cause of God, these they must, necessarily, send to the Holy Land, in order to be corrected and rectified (or approved of), and then can be returned to them, and then published. Before their being corrected there, and before securing permission from here, their publication is by no means allowable.

As to the prayer (by which he means obligatory prayer, which is to be said three times a day): Each one must say his prayer alone by himself, and this is not conditional on a private place – that is, both at home and in the worshiping-place which is a gathering-place, it is allowable for one to say his prayer, but each person must say his prayer by himself (i.e. not in company with others who might recite the same words and continue the same postures together at the same time.) But if they chant supplications (communes) together and in company in a good and effective voice – – this is very good.

O thou servant of Baha:

Thy letter dated July 26, 1906, was received. Correspondence between the believers of the Orient and the Occident as well as between the different states of America, is of the utmost importance and is conducive to the enkindlement and attraction of the hearts. Show thou great consideration in this matter.

Thou hast written concerning the translation of Tablets. Perfect translation will be made at a time when a committee must be composed of several Persians and several Americans, all of whom must have the utmost proficiency in both Persian and English language. Then the Tablets will be translated through this committee. For the present the organization of such a committee is not possible. Therefore whenever the publication of a Tablet becomes necessary, have a proficient person translate it, then circulate it, and the end will be attained.

Regarding the Station of this Servant – My station is Abdu’l-Baha – – My Name Abdu’l-Baha – – My Name is Abdu’l-Baha. My qualification is Abdu’l-Baha. My praise is Abdu’l-Baha. My title is Abdu’l-Baha. All the friends of God must declare this word, in order that all of them become united and harmonized upon it. No difference must arise. Collect, translate, print, and spread all the Tablets written by Me regarding this question.

Concerning the Book of Akdas. Undoubtedly it must be translated by a scientific committee of translators. The translation of one person is not sufficient.

Concerning the Spiritual Assembly of Washington. I supplicate unto God that it may finally become the cause of the Unification of all the nations of the world.

The maid-servant of God, Miss Barney has not yet returned from Persia. God willing, we will direct her to travel to those parts.

You have written regarding the believers of Baltimore. Undoubtedly, whenever opportunity affords the believers of Washington must go to Baltimore, become engaged in teaching the Truth, spread the carpet of feast and prepare the Heavenly Table.

Convey respectful greeting on my behalf to the maidservant of God, Miss Morton, and say: – “thou divinely attracted one! Day and night, with an eloquent tongue, teaching thou the heedless ones; awaken those who are speechless and silent. Undoubtedly the Confirmation of the Holy Spirit will descend upon thee.”

Announce on my behalf respectful greeting to the attracted maid-servant of God, Miss Alma Knobloch and say: – “O thou beloved maid-servant of God! Now is the time, now is the moment in which like unto Mary Magdalene, (who opened her tongue in the city of great Rome) thou may arise, and become engaged in teaching the coming of the Kingdom of God, and spread far and wide to the ears the glad-tidings of the Realm of Eternity.”

In Brief: O thou servant of Baha: Strive ye that the souls be engaged in all parts of Europe, with the utmost purity and Sanctification, in the diffusion of the Fragrance of God.

Undoubtedly teachers both from among the women as well as the men must go to Australia and New Zealand, whenever the means and opportunity are brought about. Now make ye an effort, that perchance through correspondence some souls in those parts may become illuminated with the Light of the Kingdom.

O thou servant of Baha! Rest thou assured! I supplicate from God that thou mayest be delivered wholly from passion and desire and become the faithful and sincere servant of the Beauty of Abha!

O thou who art firm in the Covenant!

Thou hast written to his honor Manshadi regarding the Feast. This feast is one of nineteen days which His Holiness the Bab had established and was also commanded, encouraged and urged by the Blessed Perfection. Therefore it is of the utmost importance. Undoubtedly, consider it with the utmost attention, and give it importance, in order that it may be permanently established.

The friends of God may unite; associate with each other in the utmost joy and fragrance; conduct themselves in the utmost politeness and dignity; chant the Divine Words; read beneficial articles; recite Abdu’l-Baha’s epistles; urge and fill each other with love and longing to all humanity, commune in the utmost joy and spirit; read the Poems, attributes and praises of the Living, the Unchangeable and deliver eloquent speeches. The host must personally serve the friends; ask of the Welfare of all, and exercise kindness with utmost humbleness. If the meeting is held as it should be – – as above mentioned – – that supper is the Divine supper, its results are as that one and of the same effect.

O thou truthful servant of the Beauty of Abha! Thou hast written regarding Baltimore. Convey thou my respectful greeting to Miss Morton and say unto her: – “Endeavor thou with all thy power in order that thou mayst illumine Baltimore; establish an everlasting edifice; light a candle that the lights of it may shine forth eternally upon the ages and centuries.”

Thou hast written regarding the Tablet “By thee O thou Supreme O thou faithful” – – this tablet is for seeking a cure for diseases. When they wish recovery for a sick one, they should be in the utmost state of attention; commemoration and attraction in reading it with a sweet melody.

Thou hast written regarding Buddha and Confucius. Buddha was a glorious personage. Confucius also was the cause of progress, glory and happiness of the people of China. Now is not the time for us to speak of the stations and degrees of those in the past. The present must be considered. Whatsoever passed is past. Now is the time for us to limit the discussion to the greatest light of peace and reconciliation of this age; speak of the Blessed Perfection and tell of His admonitions, advices and Teachings. Buddha and Confucius were kings who passed away in the past. Their Kingdoms in this world came to an end and their cycles passed. Now is the Throne of the Kingdom of Abha is pitched and the Blessed Perfection is sitting upon the Throne of Majesty. This call must be raised; that the word of God elevated and in accordance with the admonitions and advices of the Blessed Perfection.

Thou hast written regarding Pioush Kenty Goush an inhabitant of Calcutta, India, that he sent some names that you may converse with them concerning the Cause of God. There is no harm in your corresponding with them. Perhaps it will be beneficial. Concerning the tests unquestionably, they must be severe in order that the souls who are weak may stay away and those who are firm and truthful may shine like unto the rising stars from the horizon of the great uprightness.

It has been concluded that when she arrives in America she will discuss the questions with you. Whatever will be the conclusions of your discussions write to Acca. The maid-servant of Baha is in Paris; she will go to America. These services of thine are in reality worthy of praise, that thou hast sacrificed thyself wholly to the True One.

Mr. Harris and Mr. Ober arrived and stayed a few days here. Then with the utmost joy and fragrance they started forward toward India.

Thy letter which was written on March 7^th was received and its contents become known. Thou hast written regarding the election of a committee. This is very acceptable, is conducive to the glory of the Cause of God and the spreading of the Fragrance of God in those regions. I hope that this committee progresses day by day until it become a merciful Assembly. Thou hast written regarding the correspondence with other parts that from now on it will be carried under the Name of the Baha’i Assembly of Washington. This is also acceptable. I hope that this committee becomes established and its members be of the utmost unity and affinity. If the Baha’i Assembly of Washington arises in a befitting manner to love, service and magnanimity, the lights of the Love of God will be cast upon all sides from that Assembly and it will find more importance day by day until it attains to the Most Supreme Station.

Regarding the news of the Arrival of the attracted maidservant of God, Mrs. Gettsinger, and Mr. Lucas, to Washington and the arrangements of the meetings in the house of the maid-servant of God, Mrs. Barney, it became the cause of the utmost joy. I hope that Mrs. Barney, Mrs. Getsinger, and Mrs. Lucas become confirmed in a great service. Likewise the news of the going of MacNutt to Washington and the account of his lectures it became conducive to happiness.

God willing, the circulation of the pamphlet of “Religious Unity” will display a good influence.

Convey the wonderful Abha greeting to the friends and the maid-servants of the Merciful.

The letter dated April 23^rd, 1907, was received and its contents became the cause of the happiness of the heart of this grieved One, for it was an evidence of exertion and magnanimity in the service of the Cause of God.

Thou hast written regarding the publication of a magazine. If you edit one magazine every six months – – two in a year – – then forward it to the Holy Land to be corrected and returned after due correction for its publication – – it is very acceptable and will be the cause of the penetration of the Word of God.

His Honor, Menhadi was sent to Port Said. Regarding the general Tablet, God willing, whenever it is forwarded print it and spread it to all points.

Regarding the petition which you are writing to His Imperial Majesty, the Shah of Persia, and that the signatures of the friends are coming in, it is very praiseworthy.

Regarding the Bureau of Statistics of the United States, that thou hast arranged to write an article for them to be printed by the government, it is very good, but do not give large numbers (of Baha’is in America).

Thy former articles were received. I have not yet had time to read them. However one of your articles was corrected and forwarded, and you have printed and circulated. Now write thou a new article and send it here to be corrected. It is better.

Regarding the proposition which you suggest that one of the maid-servants of the Merciful reside in the Land of Desire and be the medium for the regulation of correspondence. Now it is not according to wisdom. Therefore, now edit thou a magazine in Persian and English, then forward it here to be revised and sent back for publication.

Convey the wonderful Abha greeting to all the friends of God.

Thou hast written regarding thy visit to Dr. Fisher in Stuttgart. This was very acceptable. If Miss Alma Knobloch assist him (in teaching the Truth) important results will become manifest.

O thou my kind friend! I have the utmost love for thee, and I ask God that thou mayst become assisted in the world and in the Kingdom and proceed as Paul and Peter in spreading the word of God and diffusing the Fragrances of God and become the manifest ensign in the regions of America.

Perhaps thou wilt meet a person in Paris who is thoughtless and follows his own desires. Forget thou wholly his vein sayings and know thou that in future again thou wilt become in touch with such souls. But, praise be to God the Fire of Love is to such a degree that the suggestions of such souls do not at all effect thee.

In brief, arise thou in the service of thy Lord with utmost firmness and steadfastness. I was very much pleased with thee. Undoubtedly this Favor will become in the cause of the greatest development for thee.

Likewise you and his honor Mirza Ahmad are two brothers and like unto two birds living in one nest and singing one melody.

O thou my beloved friend!

For a long time thou didst have the longing to visit the Blessed Spot and the yearning to meet this imprisoned One. Finally this Gift became realized; but it was for one moment and as the dew to the rose-garden of the hearts. The destiny was such and the means were brought about in this way. I became sad and disappointed more than thyself. But, I hope that this meeting became as the wick of the lamp and the fire, that as soon as it was touched it became ignited. I am expecting the results of this meeting, so that I may see thee lighted as a candle and burning thyself with the fire of the Love of God as a moth; weeping like unto the cloud by the greatness of Love and attraction; Laughing like unto the meadow and stirred into cheerfulness like unto the young tree by the wafting of the breezes of the Paradise of Abha.

All the believers in the East and in this Spot are expecting the receipt of letters from thee.

O thou who art firm in the Covenant!

Thy letter was received and its contents became evident. Thou has written regarding the days of summer that thou hast vacation for three months and a half. Shouldst thou find any companions make thou a trip to Persia; for during three months and a half it is possible to reach Teheran, stay there a few days and then return, but the time is not sufficient to come to the Holy Land. If the trip to Persia cannot be brought about then to Eshkabad.

Regarding the question of matrimony know thou that the command of marriage is eternal. This is a divine creation, and there is not the slightest possibility that change or alteration affect this divine creation (marriage).

Regarding the remains of his honor the Beloved Breakwell, him who hast attained to the meeting of the Countenance of His Lord in His great Kingdom, must be interred in that very land, not in some other place; for to transfer the remains of the believers from one city to another is against the text of the Book.

Concerning the Word of Baha’u’llah, it must be written with O and not with U.

Regarding the Maronites. All the Communities of the world will finally become familiar with this great and Most Holy Cause, and all of them will enter under the shade of the Word of God.

Convey my respectful greeting to Mrs. Margaret B. Peeks and say: – “We hope that day by day thou mayst take high flights, attain to greater spiritual attractions, thy word become more penetrative through the power of the Spirit, and through the Confirmations of the Kingdom of Abha become more illumined. This is the Path of Salvation and Prosperity. This is the attractive Power of the Holy Spirit from the Supreme concourse.”

Convey the utmost longing on behalf of this Imprisoned one to the believers of Paris and become thou the Cause of their joy and happiness.

It would be better and more pleasant if thou couldst find a companion for thy trip through Persia. Mr. Sprague had such an intention, should he be prepared, he was permission.

Undoubtedly year after year this feast will become more important and this banquet will become the delectable paradise.

Exercise on my behalf the utmost kindness to Mrs. Coles.

Convey the wonderful Abha greetings to Mrs. Allen.

Announce the glad-tidings of the Bounty of the Almighty to Miss Moore.

Praise greatly on my behalf Mirza Ahmad.

Indeed the sweet melody of the puils of Mrs. Hannen gladdened the hearts of the people of the Supreme Concourse.

O thou sincere servant of the Beauty of Abha. Indeed thou art self-sacrificing in service and art honored among mankind in the servitude of God. This is naught but the signs of confirmation and assistance of his Highness the Merciful. Therefore it is befitting to thank and praise the Lord of Existence.

Thou dear spiritual friend!

Thy epistle was received. There is not time. A brief answer will be written.

Mr. and Mrs. Hannen are two melodious birds of the Garden of knowledge. Therefore, they raise a new melody and make the hearers gleeful and happy.

O kind friend. Hasten to the Assemblies of the Beloved during the summer season, until the life-giving Spring arrives and a fresh ecstasy manifests itself in the hearts and spirits. And if thou have time and opportunity is accorded thee, hasten to India to make Mr. Howard Struven also your companion in the trip.

Abdu’l-Baha loves thee with heart and life and seeks aid and confirmation from the Kingdom of Abha in thy behalf. Thus mayest thou become wholly a bright candle and star shining from the horizon of Guidance.

Whenever I remember thee, I experience spirit and fragrance. I hope that thou mayest also be thus, so that the bonds of love may grow strong. Seek thou the nearest of the Threshold and desire the Bounty of Abha. I mention thee and thou engage thyself in communion.

Upon thee and thy fellow traveler be El Baha el Abha.

Thy letter was read. As I do not have time, I will answer it briefly. Rest thou assured that the Confirmations of the Blessed Perfection shall encircle thee from all sides. Travel thou with Mr. Howard Struven to Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands, and from there depart toward Japan and meet Professor Barakatullah. Convey to him My yearning and greeting and say:

“Endeavor so that thou mayst become a heavenly blessing, infuse the Fragrance of Life into the hearts of the people of Japan, become thou the first conqueror of that country, hoist the Divine Ensign in that region, become a Sign of Kingdom, build the foundation of the Edifice of God and, like unto the Heavenly Luminary, shine and gleam from the horizon of that region. This is the Most Great Guidance. This is the outcome of the human world! This is the Eternal Outpouring! This is the Effulgence of the Realm on High! I hope that thou mayst become assisted thereby.”

Then from Japan turn your faces toward Burma and India and from there come to Acca. I hope that this trip may become very blessed. Although thou art full of hope, yet I am sending thee, and at every moment I plead and supplicate at the threshold of the Blessed Perfection and pray and entreat, asking for thee Confirmation and Assistance.

Thou hast written regarding the matter of the Mashrak-el-Azcar that in America it becomes stronger and more prevalent day by day. This news became the cause of great happiness. I ask God that this lofty structure may be raised ere long in that vast continent.

O thou who art firm in the Covenant:

Your letter dated August 13^th, 1910, was received. Indeed the (inharmony of the friends in New York became the cause of utmost sorrow to Abdu’l-Baha. The purpose of the manifestation of the Kingdom of God is for the unity and harmony of the world of humanity. Now if the friends are disunited how shall the oneness of the world of humanity become manifest?

His Holiness Christ said: – “Ye are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor wherewith shall it be salted?

Praise be to God, you are striving with soul and heart in order that you may become the cause of unity and harmony and God willing you shall be confirmed. The maid-servant of God – from the beginning was in the utmost sincerity; her meeting was always the cause of harmony and unity.

Convey the wonderful Abha greeting to the attracted maid-servant of God, Mrs. Sterling. I humbly supplicate to the Kingdom of Abha on her behalf and seek confirmation and assistance to that dear maid-servant of God.

Convey on my behalf the utmost love and compassion to all the friends and the maid-servants of the merciful at Utica, Johnstown, also Clinton and I ask from the favors of the Blessed Perfection to guide thy relatives to His Kingdom.

Indeed the marriage of Juliet to you will be productive of good results. Day by day it is and it shall be evident and manifest. She is my daughter and thou art my son.

The mother of Juliet Thompson has written me a letter, stating that there are many good hindrances regarding your union with Juliet, and she has mentioned too as you are insisting very much in this matter, you will become at last, the cause of Juliet’s death, therefore you should leave Juliet to her own will.

If she has the utmost desire in this union, it is acceptable, if not there are many wives for you in America as well as in Persia (to marry one of them). But you must be very kind to Juliet so that she may not become sorry.

O dear Friend:

The contents of your letter to Mr. Molk have become known to me. Praise be to God that in this triumphant day of Naw Ruz the lamp of pleasure has been kindled, and the time passed in happiness and joy. Surely in these days of Ridvan you have been in great harmony and peace, having heard and enjoyed the songs of the nightingale of mysteries among the fields of flowers and the gardens of roses. As the friends in America are free, verily they are able to enjoy these days of festivals.

You have written that there were several meetings of joy and happiness, one for white and another for colored people. Praise be to God. As both races are under the protection of the All Knowing God, therefore the lamps of unity must be lighted in such a manner that in these meetings no distinction be perceived between the white and colored. Colours are phenomenal, but the realities of men are Essence. When there exist unity of the Essence what power has the phenomenal? When the light of reality is shining what power has the darkness of the unreal? If it be possible gather these two races black and white into one assembly and put such love into their hearts that they shall not only unite but even intermarry. Be sure that the result of this will abolish differences and disputes between black and white. Moreover by the will of God may it be so. This is a great service to the world of humanity. Mr. Gregory is present in great happiness. He went to Acca and visited the Holy Threshold and the Supreme Court. He is now day and night mingling with the friends of God and Abdu’l-Baha in joy and gladness. He will return to America very soon and you the white people should then honor and welcome this shining colored man in such a way that all the people will be astonished.

The matters concerning Mashrak-El-Azcar are very important. Strive to the utmost because it is important. Praise be to God that Mashrak-El-Azcars have been started in many places and even villages. In some it has been built and in others substitutes have been organized and people are engaged in the mornings in Commemorating God. Renew my new Baha’i greetings to all the friends.

O my dear Remey:

Your epistle was considered. Be thou not grieved because of thy broken engagement with the maid-servant of God, Juliet and be not sad or lost of heart.

Marriage without complete mutual attraction and contentment will eventually cause care or worry and result in a thousand troubles and difficulties. Since Juliet and her mother were and are not all pleased with this marriage, thou must certainly reveal the greatest severance. Even if hereafter they urge thee thou must not accept.

Praise be to God, there are lovely girls in America and Persia. Whomsoever thou shouldst desire, she will accept thee with the utmost of thankfulness and will be thanks-giving to God all the days of her life for having wedded one like unto thee. If thou findest not in America, there are in Persia.

O thou Mr. Remy!

In Arabic diction, Reme means gazelle, i.e. antelope; then O thou my gazelle; thy epistle was received and notwithstanding the lack of time, it was read with complete attention.

As about to spread the Message among men and to establish a manly movement, it is very agreeable. What thou hast written is very true that men should come forth in this arena too. I beg of God that thou mayest be assisted and confirmed in all affairs, vivified with the Breath of the Holy Spirit and to become one of the favored Angels.

Concerning the maid-servant of God, Juliet’s event; be thou not sorry. Whenever a respectful girl characterized by utmost modesty be to join (in marriage with) thee, do thou accept it, yet most independently, and such a marriage shall surely be facilitated for thee.

Praise be to God! Thou art now in complete severance, utmost attraction and hast arisen to carry such a magnificent affair; rest assured, thou shalt attain to a Bounty that both men and women shall emulate thee.

The maid-servant of God, Juliet as well as her mother’s account are all clear and evident to me. As to the maid-servant of God, Juliet, it is not so much her fault, others have caused her to do so.

In thy epistle it was written that thou art thinking for a committee, that is to establish an assembly of consultation.

I hope thou mayest be assisted and confirmed on all occasions. Regarding the establishment of an assembly of consultation for the Orient-Occident Interdependency Society, instructions are being written to America and surely thou shalt become informed thereof.

The news of the formation of the Peace Congress in Baltimore brought the utmost happiness. It is well that such congresses are being established in those parts. Undoubtedly you and some of the friends who have eloquent tongues may hasten to that Congress and show the translation of some of the Tablets and with eloquent speech explain the principles of the Religion of God.

Thou hast no intention except service in the Kingdom of God and hast no other aim except spreading the fragrances of God. With heart and soul solution thou desirest to serve the world of humanity and with a firm resolution thou art making an effort in the public good. With great power thou art assisting the weak ones and art asking for the recovery of the sick. Thou desirest to become the treasury of the poor ones and preferrest to thyself each individual of humanity.

Thou must deliver an eloquent speech in the Peace Congress which is going to be organized in Baltimore and give the glad-tidings of the New Kingdom. Likewise the Peace Convention which is going to be inaugurated in the City of New York. I hope that you mayest become assisted in the most great services. Convey to each one of the believers the wonderful Abha greeting and deliver to them the infinite yearning of Abdu’l-Baha

The copy of the address which you delivered before the Peace Congress was received. Truly I say thou art a ransom to the Blessed Perfection. Thou has no other thought nor idea save the spreading of the rays of the Kingdom of Abha, amongst which is this address which thou hast delivered in the Congress. The Baha’i friends must utilize all their thoughts so that they may be able to attract such gatherings to the Kingdom of Abha. For these souls without being conscious are serving the Kingdom of Abha and incidentally before reading your letter I had written two tablets to the founder of the Lake Mohonk conference on International Arbitration, and the Secretary, so that Mirza Ahmad may translate and forward to them. Undoubtedly you will become acquainted with the contents of those two tablets. Consult with Mirza Ahmad, and execute in it whichever manner is most advisable. Association and communication with this Congress is incumbent upon the believers in God, for their instrumentalities are physical and the teachings of the Blessed Perfection is the Spirit. That the body needs this spirit in order that it may become quickened and attain the greatest importance.

Concerning the matter of teaching publicly through the spiritual assemblies, unquestionably its importance is very great.

Perchance, God willing, you might become assisted to cause the entrance of the members of the Peace Congress, which consists of 400 prominent people of that country, into the Kingdom of Abha,

O my Remey. Indeed thy effort is great and thy intention is pure. The matter of the Mashrak el Azcar is of the utmost importance. A contribution has been received from Persia and forwarded. Likewise this servant has sent a sum of money. Undoubtedly it has arrived by this time.

To be brief, endeavor ye so far as you can that the spirit of the Kingdom of Abha, through the confirmation of the Holy Spirit, may be diffused through the hearts and souls of the societies and individuals of that continent and that with the greatest love and concord you may become lovers of each other and be attracted with the Light of Truth to such a degree that you may reverence each other. I testify that thy intention is such. I seek from the bounties of the Blessed Perfection uninterrupted confirmation for thee and I see thee as my associate of an my co-partner in the servitude of the Threshold of the Beauty of Abha, O My Remey!

When a Mausoleum is constructed upon a plan of nine sides it is very appropriate.

As I am today leaving Egypt for Europe, I am very anxious to meet you. Undoubtedly upon the receipt of this tablet leave America for Europe.

Explanation of Nonagonal Temple Tomb.

Some years ago at the request of Mr. and Mrs. Willard H. Ashton I made a sketch design for them for a proposed Nonagonal Temple Tomb for the grave of their child on their estate at Estes Park, Colorado.

At that time I sent a print of this design to the Master ‘Abdu’l-Baha, and shortly afterwards He wrote to me the accompanying letter (Tablet) approving this type of Tomb.

I got for thee from the Kingdom of Abha a special confirmation so that, in the threshold of the Blessed Perfection thou mayest become a favored one and, like unto the pure fountain, the Water of Life may flow through thee.

O thou who art firm in the Covenant!

Your letter was received and its contents noted. Explain in accord with the instructions which I write, and speak not one word in addition thereto. It is as follows: –

His Holiness Abraham, on Him be Peace, made a Covenant concerning His Holiness Moses and gave the glad tidings of His Coming. His Holiness Moses made a covenant concerning the Promised One, i.e. His Holiness Christ and announced the good news of His Manifestation to the world. His Holiness Christ made a covenant concerning (the) Paraclete and gave the tidings of His coming. His Holiness the Prophet Mohammed made a covenant concerning His Holiness the Bab and the Bab was the One Promised by Mohammed, for Mohammed gave the tidings of His Coming. The Bab made a covenant concerning the Blessed Beauty of Baha’u’llah and gave the glad tidings of His coming for the Blessed Beauty was the One Promised by His Holiness the Bab. Baha’u’llah made a covenant concerning a promised one who will become manifest after one thousand or thousands years. He likewise with His Supreme Pen entered into a great Covenant and Testament with all the Baha’is whereby they were all commanded to follow the Center of the Covenant after His (Baha’u’llah’s) departure, and turn not away even to a hair breadth from obeying him.

In the Book of Akdas, He (Baha’u’llah) has given positive commands in two clear instances and has explicitly appointed the Interpreter of the Book. Also in all the Divine Tablets especially in the Chapter of the Branch, all the meanings of which (interpreted) mean the Servitude of Abdu’l-Baha, that is Abdu’l-Baha – all that was needed to explain the Center of the Covenant and the Interpreter of the Book, has been revealed from the Supreme Pen. Now as Abdu’l-Baha is the interpreter of the Book He says that the “Chapter of the Branch” means Abdu’l-Baha, that is, the Servitude of Abdu’l-Baha and none other.

In short one of the specific features of this cycle is His Holiness Baha’u’llah which has not been manifest during the former cycles – – is that His Holiness Baha’u’llah left during the former difference (or division). For in His Blessed Day He made a Covenant and Testament with the traces of the Supreme Pen and explained the one to whom all should turn; and He explicitly pointed to the Interpreter of the Book, and thus closed all doors of interpretations. We must all offer thanks to God for He gave us rest (or Peace) in this blessed cycle, and left no occasion for anyone to hesitate (to doubt). All must therefore obey and be submissive and wholly turn themselves to the One appointed by Him, (i.e. the Center of the Covenant).

But all explanations must be limited to what has been stated once. Do you by means exceed it, so that it may be conducive to harmony and remove differences.

O thou illuminated youth and my spiritual beloved!

Thy letter was received and its perusal imparted happiness impossible to describe. It was an indication of the loftiness of thy nature, the strength of thy effort and the purity of thy intentions; Abdu’l-Baha’s happiness is caused by such matters. If the material luxuries of the whole earth were available to Abdu’l-Baha He would not think for one moment that there is such a thing as comfort and luxury in the world. But when a soul-perfuming fragrance wafts from the Rose-Garden of the Hearts of the friends to the nostrils of Abdu’l-Baha such joy is realized that involuntarily I render thanksgiving unto the Blessed Perfection who has trained such servants.

In brief your letter imparted to me the utmost happiness. This thought of yours is very appropriate. (Referring to a letter telling of the spiritual awakening among the people caused by Abdu’l-Baha’s visit to America). I hope that a new stir may be produced in the hearts of the believers and great firmness and steadfastness become manifest that this may lead to the guidance of others.

Therefore with a divine power, a heavenly resolution and purpose, and eloquent tongue and heart overflowing with the Love of God, take in thy hands the Tablets and travel throughout the cities even as far as in Honolulu, Hawaii. Travel thou in all the American cities. Call ever one to firmness in the Covenant. Exhilarate everyone with the Spiritual Wine of the Covenant, and guide everyone to the diffusion of the Fragrances of God. Raise the cry of “Ya Baha El Abha” and call the name of “Ya Ali-El-Allah”. (O thou high one who is the most high!)

Awaken the friends for ere long a test shall come. Perchance some persons outwardly firm and inwardly “wavering” shall come to these parts in order to weaken the faith of the friends in the Covenant of God. Let them be mindful. As soon as they see a trace of violation of the covenant they must hold aloof from the violators. Day and night let them strive so that the Light of the Kingdom of Abha may encircle the globe and the darkness of error may entirely be dispelled.

Convey the wonderful Abha greeting to all the friends especially the maid-servant of God, Mrs. Dixon, the maid-servant of God, Mrs. Hannen, the maid-servant of God, Mrs. Haney and all the believers of God and the maid-servant of the Merciful.

Upon thee be Baha El Abha.

Your letter was received. It contained good news. It was the means of great happiness. The holding of meetings, attraction and the promotion of the Kingdom of God is the most wonderful confirmation. I am made very happy by the Washington believers.

In regard to the publication of articles in the newspaper, consult about this matter with Mrs. Parsons. If she deems it advisable it is very good to publish articles from the pen of Mr. Jos. H. Hannen, which articles may be in accord with my public addresses – – in such wise that they may not cause opposition and may not agitate the thoughts of the public. Do not exceed at all from her opinion concerning this matter.

In regard to the prospect of your marriage, it is very acceptable. This is likewise the cause of my happiness. Concerning the matter of the maid-servant of God, – – associate with each other with the love and kindness of brother and sister.

Convey to all the friends the wonderful Abha greeting!

Thy letters were received. There is not time to answer them in detail, therefore I answer them briefly. The publication of the address of Abdu’l-Baha in each city depends upon the consent of the believers of that city. For example the publication of the addresses delivered in Washington depends upon the wish that they may be gathered together and published in the city of Washington. Other cities cannot interfere with this and if the Washington believers wish to print these addresses in another city they are also free to do it.

Concerning the Mashrika-El-Azcar Convention, if the believers of God, especially Mrs. Parsons, deem it advisable to have it convened in Washington, they may do so, and if they think it is not advisable they may not do so. They may convene it in another city.

Concerning the subject of the Covenant. Firmness in the Covenant means obedience, so that no one may say this is my opinion. Nay rather he must obey that which proceeds from the pen and tongue of the Covenant. I am Abdu’l-Baha. The crown on my head is the servitude of Baha’u’llah and the service of his believers.

Thou hast asked about the journey of Baha’u’llah: The Blessed Perfection traveled directly from Teheran to Hamadan; from Hamadan to Kermanshah and from Kermanshah directly to Bagdad.

As regards the Society which is being organized in Shanghai, China, for the affiliation of the devotees of various religions: Mail for that English lady (The Honorable Mrs. Gordon) the printed literature and newspapers concerning this cause, and encourage her to go personally to the meetings of the Society and explain to them this Blessed Cause which is the Universal Religion bringing under the Radiance of the Sun of Reality all the religions and denominations, making them to associate with one another and suffering them to become as one nation. This matter is important. Give it due attention and correspond with the members of the Society at all times. If it is possible undoubtedly send some teachers to those parts so that they likewise may present themselves at those meetings and spread the Teachings of God. However, they must be souls severed from this world, attracted with the Fragrance of Holiness and in the utmost state of purity and sanctity.

O thou herald of The Covenant!

Your two detailed letters have been received. Praise be to God thou art kind to thy father and thy mother, and wish all that they treat thee with severity and offend thee, thou art adding to thy affection towards them. This is the quality of the people of Baha, that they confer a cup of sweet honey when a cup of bitterness is handed to them.

Convey the utmost affection upon my behalf to the maid-servant of God, Miss Izetta Jewel, likewise unto her honorable mother.

Complete and perfect thou the book of proofs of the Cause of Baha’u’llah, likewise the novel.

If is is possible and feasible leave thou for the West of America and make a trip soon to the Hawaiian Islands (Honolulu) so that thou mayest exhilarate the friends of that region through the cup of the Covenant. If any soul has cast any doubts remove thou those doubts from the hearts with the utmost love and affection. But do not speak with anyone with severity, even though he may move his tongue in terror, saying contradictory words, because the people of Baha must be like the honey of faithfulness and sweeten every taste and treat and behave towards all the people of the world with kindness, even though they may be the most hateful of this people.

Going to the Philippine Islands is not of positive necessity, especially as your parents show great opposition in this matter. All people have undutiful sons and thou has a father whose temper is intense. In any case they are thy father and thy mother, and to have respect and love for them is obligatory and incumbent upon thee.

I hope that thou wilt be strengthened in all matters, and it is certain that thou art strengthened. Be thou assured.

A new effect was created with every breath that thou hast exhaled its results will appear in the future. I hope that thou mayst become confirmed under all circumstances and be the means of guidance of others. When the apostles of Christ were traveling around the world, the importance of their journeys was not known. Now it has become evident and manifest how important and fruitful it was. For every herald of the Kingdom of God is the Trumpet of Israel who confers life upon the hearers.

Shouldst thou know how much I love thee assuredly thou wilt soar through joy and happiness.

O thou my Remey! May his Holiness Baha’u’llah be thy Confirmer and Helper! May the splendor of the Sun of Reality illumine thy path! May the sea of divine Confirmation cast its waves over thee! May the Cloud of Mercy of God pour upon thee! May the Breeze of Providence become the cause of the fragrance of thy nostril! May the Treasury of the Kingdom be thy wealth! This is the prayer of Abdu’l-Baha on thy behalf.

Apparently they are Yahyas; that is they are the followers of the enemy of God, but they dissimulate. At first show them love, then little by little in the course of conversation mention to them the name of Soghe’Ezel and speak with them in a friendly tone so that they may cause the appearance of whatever is hidden in their hearts and thou observes that they are mentioning the name of Azal, then you announce to all the believers that they should not approach them. These people are very hypocritical and deceitful. I have written repeatedly that any Persian although he may be my relative or Afnana – if he has not credentials in his hand the believers must not at all approach him or associate with him. Because all the enemies of the cause in Persia – – Yahyas, Nakazeen and Sufists – – are turning their attention to America and will come in order to weaken the foundation of the Cause of God. You must protect the Cause of God and write to every one and awaken them that they not meet any Persian who has not in his hand a credential in my hand writing and signature.

Announce to all the believers of Honolulu, one after one, my longing greeting.

As my health was in the utmost state of weakness and infirmity no answer could be written but praise be to God through the Divine Bestowals my health is much improved and to a certain extent the physical forces have gained new vigor, consequently immediately I engaged myself in writing to thee this letter.

Praise be to God, the spirit enjoys the plenary power, the divine glad-tidings are descending uninterruptedly and the Breaths of the Holy Spirit are confirming.

Thank thou God that thou wert assisted to perform great services, hast cried out in the name of the Covenant of God, and awakened those who are asleep. I am pleased with thee and beg for thee Confirmation from His Holiness Baha’u’llah. Spend thee this winter wherever it is pleasing to thee and if it is possible make a journey to Europe during the season of the Spring. In the various countries in Europe cry in the name of the Covenant of God, especially in Germany and France.

Convey to each and all the believers on my behalf the wonderful Abha greeting.

The sum of the twenty pounds that thou hast forwarded is distributed amongst the poor and the needy.

Thy letter was received. Praise be to God that the divine friends in Boston are in the utmost attraction and enkindlement, Boston is an ideal center. If the Fire of the Love of God is ignited in that city, its effect shall be spread all parts; I hope that this most longed for object will be obtained.

Regarding the Convention of Mashrekol-Azkar in Washington; unquestionably if “public meetings” are organized they will become the means of the promotion of the Cause of God. In those (Public) meetings, universal and not particular principles must be discussed; those principles which I have expounded in the “Public meetings”. Only that identical program must be followed. It is as follows:- The Oneness of the World of Humanity; The Investigation of Reality; The Essential Unity of Humanity; The Abandonment of Religious, Denominational, Racial and Patriotic Prejudices; the Conformity of Divine Religion with Reason and Science; The Religion of God must become the Cause of Amity and Love amongst mankind, otherwise it is better to forswear it; Equality between man and woman; the Essential Necessity of the Confirmation of the Holy Spirit; The Demonstration of Divinity and Inspiration of the Holy Spirit Influence of Baha’u’llah; The underlying Unity of all existing Faiths; The Dawn of the Sun of Reality from the Horizon of Persia; The Dawn of Universal Peace; Universal Language; The Education of the children of all the religions under an universal standard of instruction and a common curriculum. Questions of this nature must be propounded in “public meetings”. Consult about all those things with Mrs. Parsons and other believers and prepare ye a program accordingly.

Thy detailed letters were received and I became informed with the particulars of Paris. You deal with the people there with courtesy. Do not vex anybody whatever. Speak with kindness and love.

Mr. and Mrs. Scott are unvexed (selfless) persons, have love. Show the utmost of kindness and love to them, likewise toward others.

If a person blames about others to you, prevent him from blaming.

Dr. Faremont is an aged person, because in the beginning of his talk he says a

Sentence of the word of the Blessed Perfection. Deal with him with courtesy, because he is in the utmost of old age. Consideration for such persons is essential.

However thou must deal in such a manner in Paris that the Baha’is may be satisfied and rejoice with thee. In the end it (i.e. the affairs) will be all right.

Go to the North of Holland and to Stuttgart. The Baha’is in Germany are very enkindled. You will be very happy there.

Perhaps in Blaricum, North of Holland, you may change Mr. Van Ginkel through the power of the Confirmations of the Beauty of Abha.

O thou my spiritual son!

Thy letter was received. Thou hast written that a few persons have become the cause of the confusion of thoughts in that city. This question is of no importance. Thou knowest how in the beginning of the matter of Ibrahim, Kheirollah became the means of the perplexity of the minds, but similar unto the summer clouds of the East no rain descended. In a short period it was disposed of and forgotten. Likewise, the imaginations of these person shall, ere long, be scattered like unto those rainless clouds and the Sun of Reality will shine forth with the utmost brilliancy. Aga-Mirza Assadollah and Aba Sayad Yaha have already departed for that country; so that they may exhort Doctor Fareed and His mother. Perchance they may repent and return. If in reality they should repent whole-heartedly and conscientiously they will become the recipients of the Glance of Mercy; otherwise in a short time, like unto others, they will become dispersed, remorseful and in loss.

Rest ye assured in the bestowal of the Blessed Perfection and do not pay attention to these discussions. With the utmost resolution and constancy call the souls to the kingdom of Abha and invite them to the firmness and steadfastness in the Covenant and Testament. Read to them the translation of the Branch and speak with gentleness, moderation and loving-kindness; saying: We have no other aim save the protection of the Fortified Fortress of the Cause of God. We must guard this Fortified Fortress from the attack of the thoughtless ones. Hence we must all turn our faces to the appointed Center in order that the Baha’i Unity might be preserved; otherwise in one year the Baha’is will be divided into a thousand sects. We entertain no other object except the safety of the Cause of God. While Abdu’l-Baha is the target for a thousand arrows, it is allowable, it is permissible, to whirl at him another dart? O! A little justice is necessary! For thirty years he has been patient with these persons, taking hold of every means and exercising towards them every form of affection, hoping against hope to extinguish this fire. At last exhausted every means and was obliged to protect from them the Fortified Fortress of the Cause of God.

Investigate the nature of the actions of this person from America, how he acted during those successive years, how he practiced mendicancy in the name of the True One, how he stated many fact contrary to truth and how he became the means of disgrace of the Cause of God.

At a time when three thousand two hundred pounds were offered by the American believers for my traveling expenses, and I did not accept, because, praise be to God, there were no lack of means, hence their contribution was not received at such a time, this person under various propositions was collecting secretly five, ten, fifty and hundred dollar bills. Finally Abdu’l-Baha was forced to send him away and giving him adequate traveling expenses he settled in Cairo, then he started begging money from America, and thus becoming the means of the corruption of the Cause of God. In private, while in New York, he claimed to be the Blessed Perfection and in great secrecy he gathered himself a few thoughtless women, in order that they may announce to the people that he is the Blessed Perfection.

In brief, the divulgence of these facts will be necessary in case he does not repent and return through the advice of Aga Sayad Yahya. But if they repent and return do not disclose these matters. In case they do not repent and return Mirza Azzizollay Khan and Mirza Kabibollah Khadabakeh will come to London and with their cooperation, in a pleasant manner, with the utmost moderation, make the believers understand this question.

Synthesize and compose ye in a simple and effective manner the heavenly principles and present them to the listeners in meetings and gatherings. Through the ideal Glad-tidings and the lordly suggestions breathe ye a new spirit in the hearts of the friends of God and encourage and incite them in the promotion of the Word of God. Convey to all the friends my longing greeting, especially to his honor Mr. George Latimer.

O thou swift-winged heavenly bird!

Truly I say thou art a sweet-singing, high-soaring, upward moving nightingale! In every garden and orchard thou art raising a song and melody and in every mountain and plain thou art breaking forth into a heavenly lay. Thou art displaying the utmost effort and art not fatigued and disheartened by hardships and toils. Thou hast dedicated thyself wholly to the Word of God and hast become entirely a true sacrifice. Ere long through this melody and song of thine the sleepy souls will become awakened and the dead ones will be resuscitated.

Convey to his honor, Mr. Latimer, the utmost of my love and kindness. I become very happy over the news of the meetings held in his city and home, and I hope those meetings may be repeated again and again in the future on a greater scale and his honor Mr. Latimer and his father and mother may obtain infinite felicity. Praise be to God that Mr. Latimer was thy traveling companion in most of thy voyages and occupied his time in the service of the Word of God. Convey to all the friends greetings and longings.

Since the extinction of the fire of war four successive letters have been received from you. The utmost happiness they brought for they carried with them the glad-tidings of the health and welfare of the friends of God.

Praise be to God that throughout this violent storm the Ark of the Covenant hath attained unto the shore of Salvation. The danger was innocent and the occasion for fear and apprehension prepared. The friends in all regions remained safe and preserved under the shade of Divine protection, particularly in the Holy Land where the danger and calamities were infinite and limitless. Every day brought a new trial and every hour carried with it a special difficulty. In brief, had not Divine Protection been extended, existence for a single day would have been absolutely impossible. This verily is one of the miracles of God that I am the friends in the Holy Land should remain safe and protected while being held in the strong grip of a group of sanguinary persons.

Prior to the war, numerous letters have been dispatched to America wherein it was manifestly recorded that a severe commotion is ahead and a great agitation lies in the near future; that the people of the world shall be involved in crucial danger and affliction, and trying tests shall come to pass; that the pillars of comfort shall quake from the intensity of commotion and that blessed souls shall shine resplendently like unto the stars of the Supreme Horizon.

Praise be to God, the showers of the blessings of the Blessed Beauty are abundantly pouring and the grace and bounty of the Loving Lord complete. At present these gloom clouds are in the process of dissipation from the horizon of the world; the friends of God must, in accordance with the prescribed directions which have formerly been sent, forget everything, hasten to different lands and regions and promulgate the Divine Teachings. For this blood-thirsty war has made the world of mankind tired of life, all ears are eager to harken to the call of Universal Peace, to the declaration of the oneness of the world of Humanity, to full understanding, to the annihilation of estrangement and the hoisting of the standard of affection. The majority of people are ready to listen to the Divine Teachings. Opportunity must not be let slip away for at another occasion such a capacity will not be found and effort and endeavor shall be in vain. Today is the day of teaching, for all men are athirst and Divine Teaching is the refreshing water. Later on the thirst shall not remain so severe. Hence one should seize the opportunity so that possibly all races and creeds may unites and this enmity and rancor may vanish from among men.

Convey on my behalf to the two respectable personages, Mr. Richard Mayer and Mrs. Ledyard, the utmost love and kindness. I beg and supplicate to the Divine Kingdom and beseech for these two purified souls limitless favors that they may sprout in the Paradise of Abha on the banks of the water of Life and grow and flourish by the outpouring of the cloud of bounty.

The designs of the Mashrek-el-Azkar have been perused. All are good. That which is chosen by the Committee of the Temple is best. The report which thou hadst written of they travel with Mr. Latimer to the various parts of the world, to Honolulu, Hawaii and other regions has been noted. Praise be to God thou hast been assisted in such a great service.

The Exhilaration produced by every kind of melody is temporal save the Divine Melody which will be reverberated throughout all ages and cycles and its exhilaration will be uninterrupted. Therefore thank thou God that thou art the means of the illumination of the world of humanity, art exerting thyself in insight and guidance to the people, art conducive to the seeing of the blind, the hearing of the deaf, the speech of the dumb and the life of the dead ones. Thou art enlightening the dark hearts and art granting joy and happiness to the faded and withered spirits. Convey the utmost longing on my behalf to thy luminous friend and spiritual Companion, Mr. Latimer.

This blessed purpose of Thine is the magnet of the confirmations of the Abha kingdom.

Rest thou assured and engage with Mr. John Bassett in service to the kingdom of God throughout the same Southern States. This is what is required at present. Later on undertake a tour to the North America and after that thy course of action and that of Mr. John Bassett shall be determined.

Convey on my behalf the utmost love and kindness to Miss Margaret Klebbs and say:- “The people of the Supreme admire your work that, praise be to God, you are firm in the Covenant and Testament and are serving the Kingdom of God.”

Four letters from thee have been successively received and at present an answer is being given. The object of the telegram that was dispatched was thou shouldst postpone travel to the East at present and engage whether in the northern or the southern states in the promulgation of Divine Teachings. At present this is deemed advisable. Whenever travel to the East becomes suitable thou shalt be informed.

As to John Bassett’s case, verily his purpose is right but he is unable to endure traveling. Consequently leave him to himself, do not require anything of him and exercise toward him the utmost love and kindness and let him be free.

Convey on my behalf to Mr. and Mrs. Williams of Woodford, Virginia, the utmost love and kindness. Through the bounty of God, I hope that they may daily advance toward the Kingdom of God, I hope that they may daily advance toward the Kingdom and may attain unto a supreme glory and manifest bounty.

Convey my longing greeting to Mr. Peters of Seattle Washington, and say:- “If thou shouldst become wholly attracted to the Kingdom and filled with the Bounties of Baha’u’llah so that the love of God will pulsate through your veins and arteries leaving no place for a stranger, then undoubtedly all thy yearnings shall be realized.”

O thou honorable Remey! I ever think of thee and to thee my heart is ever attached. Every day I beg for thee fresh confirmation and undoubtedly thou shalt be the recipient of the favor and assistance of the Pre-Existent Lord.

Convey individually to each and all the friends the utmost love.

Undoubtedly thou shalt constantly call such meetings so that thou and other souls who are firm in the Covenant and the testament may address those meetings, may awaken the slumbering and may vivify the dead. Convey on my behalf to Reveren Mr. Grant of the utmost love and attachment. I pray on his behalf and beg the Lord of the Kingdom that he may become the brave soldier of the Lord of Hosts, may scatter the legions of the negligent ones with the power of proof, may engage with an eloquent tongue in the praise and the glorification of the Pre-Existent Lord, and may be a consummate tone of utterance, rend asunder the veils of imagination so that he may baptize the souls with the fire of the love of God, with the water of Life and with the Spirit. Convey to Dr. and Mrs. Terry and Mr. Gregory respectful greeting. These respected souls have gathered under the shade of the Tree of Life, are the promulgators of the verses of the Kingdom of the Lord of Utterances, are the birds of the rose-garden of reality and fishes in the ocean of the Divine Kingdom.

On behalf of thy parents I pray at the Threshold of the Merciful One and beg protection and assistance, and likewise for all thy family. Thou hast elevated the station of thy family and hast become the cause of their everlasting glory. At present it is not known but soon it shall be made manifest. The brothers of Joseph were at first cursing (him) and execrating his name and at last threw him into a pit but ultimately when they saw him the “Beloved of Egypt” they said:- “Verily God has chosen thee from among us and hast bestowed upon thee glory”. Thy family will eventually say the same thing.

Thy letter was received. Its contents were in the utmost sweetness, for it was indicative that with the utmost power thou hast arisen in order to link together the hearts of souls that are in America with those who are in Europe. This is of utmost importance, for the first Divine Teaching is that communities must be freed from the racial, political and even patriotic prejudices, that all men are of one race and the whole universe one land. Consider how unwise and shortsighted are the leaders of politicians and the philosophers of the present age. The American continent and Europe, that is Germany and France, are a small portion of the terrestrial Globe. What is the importance of this globe, for it commands no importance when compared to these infinite bodies that abound in this limitless space; it is like unto an insignificant spot on the surface of the wide ocean. No importance should be attached to the terrestrial globe, how much less to one of the countries of the globe. The inhabitants of countries are so immersed in their imaginations that they carved for themselves statues of imaginations, which they worship, when actually they are naught but fantastic images. Yet in spite of that they are worshipped by everyone. How heedless, unintelligent and unwise are the leaders and philosophers of today!

In short the Divine teachings constitute the unicolored pavilion of the Oneness of the World of Humanity. All the peoples of the world shall not attain unto rest except under its shadow and in accordance with these teachings, the Turks as well as the Tagic, the European as well as the American, the Asiatic as well as the African, all shall rest under the shadow of this pavilion. The friends of God must therefore deal with all the communities of the world with the utmost truthfulness and friendship without any distinction of race, so that all may embrace one another and with the utmost harmony and love may engage in the glorification of the Lord of the Kingdom.

I have delivered an address at the University of the colored men at Washington on the subject of the colored and the white. Refer to it and act accordingly.

In brief, I am greatly pleased with thy conduct and thy behavior. Praise be to God thou art freed from these limitations and imaginations, hast no purpose save the diffusion of the Divine fragrances and art ever restless and active. Thou art day and night striving to hoist the resplendent banner and to cause the shining morn to illumine all regions. From the Abha Kingdom I ever beg confirmation for thee, for without it the smallest things cannot be performed, how much less this important question.

Convey on my behalf to all the friends of God greeting.

O thou who art firm in the Covenant!

Thy letters were received! It became the cause of the utmost happiness and rejoicing; for it contained the news that the white and the colored are gathered in one meeting in America and are associating with each other with infinite love and kindness. Consider thou the Power of the Word of God, which has brought together those who were against each other. To bring the white and colored together is considered impossible, and improbable, but the Breaths of the Holy Spirit will accomplish this fact. The world of America must be very thankful for this realization; for this enmity and hatred which exist between the white and the colored races is very dangerous and there is no doubt that it will end in bloodshed unless the penetration of the Word of God, the Breath of the Holy Spirit and the Teachings of Baha’u’llah are diffused amongst them and love instead of hatred is established between the two races.

They must destroy the foundation of enmity and rancor and lay the basis of love and affinity.

The power of the Teachings of Baha’u’llah will cause the disappearance of this danger from America.

But if Mr. M – – – – was completely attracted to the Kingdom of Abha these difficulties would not have appeared. Now he must become a real Baha’i so that the heavenly army may assist and these troubles may be entirely wiped away

Write to him to read the supplications and implore toward the Kingdom of Abha! He must rest assured that these difficulties will be cleared.

Convey to all the friends of God the wonderful Abha greeting.

Would that I, too, had the time and strength to become a wanderer like thee through waste and wild, and travel over plain and sea, and be the cause of everlasting life unto men! But praised be the Lord, I have one such as thee who in My Name is exerting with the utmost zeal and ardor every endeavor and effort.

Whenever thou findest time after the termination of the war and circumstances are favorable, hasten with thy companion, Mr. Latimer, to the Holy Land.

Thy letters have been received and an answer has been written. Verily thou art firm in the Covenant, art self-sacrificing, art the son of the Kingdom and dost deserve the confirmations of His Holiness Baha’u’llah. Consequently Abdu’l-Baha is highly pleased with thee and begs for thee from His Holiness Baha’u’llah’s limitless bounties. As a result of this glad-tiding fly on the wings of joy and raise thou the melody; – “Happy I am, Blessed I am!”

Mr. and Mrs. Deuth are in the sight of Abdu’l-Baha favored and esteemed. Verily they are engaged in service. Day and night they strive that they may awaken the souls, they write articles in a moderate tone, they do not rend the veils asunder, and thus they are praised and esteemed by Abdu’l-Baha. Convey on my behalf to Richard Mayer respectful greeting. I supplicate for this enlightened soul the bounty of the Merciful.

O thou who art firm in the Covenant! If possible convey to thy parents my greeting and my respect and give them this message:- “Do not be disturbed. All is in the hands of God, and He is the Kind Father. Rest assured in His Bounty and assistance.”

The friends in Boston are indeed arising in service. I am pleased with them, am glad of their activities and ever thinking of them and beg for them all from the bounties of God assistance and confirmation. Their names are preserved and recorded in the Book of the lordly ones in the Abha Kingdom. They may rest assured in the bounty of His Holiness Baha’u’llah, that confirmation shall uninterruptedly descend upon them. I have been greatly affected by the death of Mr. Sandy Kinney. What a lovely child he was. On my behalf tell Mr. and Mrs. Kinney:- “Do not grieve, and do not lament. The tender and lovely shrub has been transferred from this world to the rose-garden of the Kingdom and that longing dove has flown to the Divine Nest. The candle has been extinguished in this nether world that it may be rekindled in the Supreme Concourse. Ye shall assuredly meet him face to face in the world of mysteries at the assemblage of Light.”

At present Wisdom does not permit that the teachers should apply to the government for half rate fares or should have the property of the Mashrekol-Azkar exempt from government taxes. Wisdom does not permit that at present. Its time will come.

Concerning thy travel, if during the Spring season thou goest to Germany and thence proceed to the Holy Land it will be highly advisable thou art permitted.

The honorable members of this New Assembly, which has been formed at Washington, must be in perfect steadfastness, because no edifice, without firmness and erectness lasts long and no tree, without being firmly rooted becomes ornamented with leaves and fruits.

It is my hope that this Assembly will, with the utmost firmness and steadfastness, arise in service.

Verily, verily thou art exerting thine energy to the utmost in Germany as thou didst the same in America. Unquestionably great results will ensue; the nostrils of the truth-seekers will be perfumed; the eyes of the longing ones will be illuminated, and in every country that thou mayst happen to be, thou wilt be assisted and confirmed.

This morning I went to see the Beloved whom I found out in His Garden. He went through the orange grove and called us to follow Him. He plucked and gave to us two oranges each with His own hands. When he came out I offered Him this

Tablet to sign it. He, while signing, said that the cold orange had benumbed His fingers. When He handed over the signed tablet to me, I found a drop of blood on it. Of course the thorns of the orange trees had wounded His hands. See, dear brother, how He suffers for us even in the smallest details of His precious daily life! I did not rewrite the tablet, for I did not want to deprive you of such a precious treasure as this drop of His sacred blood. Maybe that it signifies that you, through sincere services, have attained to the station of the martyrs of the Holy Cause. I especially dared put this note at the foot of your tablet, for it explains to you and to others why this drop of blood appeared on your tablet.

Two letters have arrived from you, one from Washington and the other from New York. Praise be to God, both were indicative of faithfulness and sufficient proof of the love of God. The contents became the cause of joy, for thou hadst written it with spirituality and fragrance.

Though His Holiness Baha’u’llah underwent great hardships and pain, endured innumerable afflictions, and was put in chains; yet praise be to God that friends are found who are devoted and sacrificial in the path of the Cause of God. From the bounties of God do I hope that that patient (one) may find comfort and consolation.

The journey to anyplace is the cause of your progress and the promulgation of the Cause of God. Because the confirmations of the Kingdom of Abha will reac continually. No matter how long it may take, there will be no harm.

I am pleased with the time you have spent with Mrs. Ledyard, also with the visit you paid to your relatives. If from coast of the Pacific you make a journey to Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia, it is certain that confirmations will reach. But now your journey to the different parts of America itself will be more fruitful. Notwithstanding that whatever thou seest fit, that is acceptable.

Some time ago I wrote thee a letter, whose content was that praise be to God, thou hast become confirmed in drawing a plan for the pilgrim house in Haifa. It is my hope that this pilgrim house may be built under your supervision. Also in the future a Mashreq’ul Azkar will be established on Mount Carmel. Thou wilt be its architect and founder. I give thee this glad tiding. Thou must be very glad and thankful for the statement. Convey to each one of the Friends the best Abha greetings.

O thou recipient of God’s Grace!

The greatest of all Divine Outpourings in this world is the shining forth of the Light of the Kingdom and the diffusion of His Divine Fragrances, for the results of the Outpourings of this Grace are everlasting and its goodly effects infinite. Every melody is raised but for a time, whereas the Voice of God soundeth through all eternity. Wherefore, praise thou God that thou art illumining mankind, art striving to enlighten and guide the people, art giving sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, speech to the dumb, life to the dead, radiance to the darkened lives and boundless joy and gladness to the withered and drooping souls.

Convey in my Name to thy illumined companion and spiritual friend, Mr. Latimer, the utmost longing.

If in body you are far, still in heart you are near. All the family day and night remember you and mention you and are not parted from your remembrance, be certain.

A talk between Abdu’l-Baha and Mr. William B. Remey of Washington, at the Hotel Rittenhouse, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Your brother mentioned your name to me. You are greatly blessed by having such a brother, at present you do not know how greatly you are blessed, but you will see this with your own eyes. Your whole family will be glorified, they will be proud that they have such a son as Mr. Remey, and as you.

Consider how the disciples were treated. While they were alive people would not have anything to do with them, but later on they felt greatly glorified if they had even the remotest relationship with them, and they were respected and revered, even the earth that was touched by their feet. The people prostrate themselves before their tombs, even up to this time; but they persecuted them in their own days. They did not like to be known as relatives of these Disciples of Christ.

While I was traveling in Palestine I came across a stony piece of ground, and I saw that a number of people had gathered around one stone, and that they were kissing it, weeping and supplicating. I asked one, “What is this?” He told me that the Apostles of Christ once upon a time had passed by this rock, that they had sat and they did not know on which of these rocks the Apostles had sat, therefore they prostrated themselves before all of them, that perchance they might come across and kiss the right stone. But in their own day the people beat them, put them in prison, ridiculed them, exiled them from their own cities and finally martyred them, and they even did not give their permission that they be buried in their own cemeteries. Even his Holiness Jesus Christ, they were not willing to have his body put in the Jews’ cemetery. The Apostles went and bought a piece of land and interred him there, the Jews took their refuse there, and that place was left like this, but they came later and built a great church over it. This was built by the mother of Constantine after three hundred years, and even up to this time in certain parts it is known as the Church of Refuse, which is really the Tomb of Christ, this is known under this name, and that word means the place where all the refuse of the city was gathered in the day of Christ and the people treated Him badly, and for three hundred years it continued in this manner.

You can go now and see what wonderful change there is, see what a wonderful church is built there, how many jewels and precious stones are collected there. The statue of Christ is bejeweled with all kinds of precious stones, so are the statues of Mary and of others; and this is the condition of the people in the days of the manifestations. They persecute them, they deride them, they ridicule them, put a crown of thorns on their head or beat them in the street, spit in their faces and finally crucify them. But later they worship their images, they kiss the ground upon which they walked, a stone upon which they sat. This is the condition of the people.

Saturday morning, August 17^th, 1918. Green Acre, Maine.

Abdu’l-Baha had taken a walk through the fields and then came to visit Mr. Remey in his temporary home for a few moments. He asked for some coffee which Mrs. Kinney sent to prepare and Mr. Remey seated as many of the party as he could. Abdu’l-Baha looked around and with much enjoyment made the following remarks:

“What a good house!* What a simple house, without any adornments. Such a natural abode, there are no extras. So many extras have been given to man by civilization that one cannot get them all in. A man strives all his life, still he finds something wanting, and they are really all extras. That which is simple is best for man. Man has thrown himself into a lot of hardships. He labors so hard to build a house, he lives and dies in order to furnish his house.

“His Holiness Christ was born in a stable. Fortunately this place was a stable for horses – – those who know anything about stables will agree that horse stables are far preferable to cow stables – – that which belonged to His Holiness, Christ, was a stable for cows. Oh, it was a very lowly place. Now a church is built on it, and it is adorned and decorated. It is a glorious affair. But had you seen the place where he was born. It was just like a barn.”

Abdu’l-Baha laughingly suggested that the rafters overhead might be covered with the plain natural colored boards of the wall partitions and that would make it more beautiful.

*Note: The building formerly had been a horse stable, but had been cleaned and partitioned off into summer lodgings.

Supper at the Master’s Table.

Friday, January 14^th, 1921.

“His honor, Mr. Remey, is a very blessed soul. Verily he is detached. Verily he is detached. This soul, this youth, is the son of an American Admiral. His father and mother are prominent people of Washington. Mr. Remey left both father and mother, and world, and whatever was in the world. He has proved the saying of His Holiness the Christ, that the son would separate from the father, and the daughter from the mother. His honor, Mr. Remey, did so work upon this principle that his father was not contented with him. He became detached from all – – he gave up his life and time for the Cause of God. His father and mother became grieved but he was not disturbed. From the day that he became a believer until now, day and night, he has been engaged in speaking and in teaching the Cause. Every difficulty and obstacle that came in his path he withstood. He taught many. He went to Honolulu. There in those farthest Islands of the Pacific he taught. He went to the cities of America, and in each place he taught. As obstacles and difficulties came in his way, he took no notice of them, troubles and obstacles in the path of God, were to him comfort and ease. In those journeys which he made he had little comfort, depending on God, he went from city to city. He traveled in those parts until he finished his service there, then he hastened singly and alone to Germany, and there he taught many souls. The it was found that he had the capacity to visit the Holy Threshold. Therefore, I asked him to come here, that he might meet you all here and forget all his troubles through this meeting with the friends, and also to visit the two Holy Thresholds. Therefore, you should pray on his behalf that God should add to his power, his kindness, his attraction, and his gift of speech, so that in the future he may be able to do more than before and that, like this lamp which is burning, he should give light.

December 19, 1919.

Dear Mason:

Well, we are on the last lap of a wonderful pilgrimage and will soon be with you again. The Master showered his bounties and blessings upon us during the twelve days we were with Him to such an extent, that when our boat arrived three days ahead of time, we found our capacities had been filled to the brim and we were happy instead of sad to be off to share His wisdom and love with others.

Many times I thought of you and our many trips together as well as those wonderful two weeks with Him five years ago. On the night of November 17^th, when we went into the first evening meeting in His Salon, just as we had done on our last visit, I was wishing that you were with me. Abdu’l-Baha divined my thought, for after a short talk He turned to me and asked: “What did you do with Mr. Remey?” His face beaming with joy and happiness. I answered that you were starting on a tour of teaching through the New England States, and though you longed to be coming with us yet you were happy in teaching there. He said: “I know he likes to be here”. Continuing: “Mr. Remey is very good. He works very hard. He is very restless. He is continually traveling from city to city. He has not left a place unvisited. He has gone everywhere, even to India. I am going to send him to Persia so that he may have one day in the East and one day in the West. His father and his mother rebuked him very much but he did not cease working. He respects them and obeys them, but when they would say: “Why are you a Baha’i?” he would not )line left out in copying) to them. In everything he would obey them, except in this. Notwithstanding that his father and mother are rich and would not deprive him of anything, yet he lives in the utmost economy. He never asks them for anything. If they offer him assistance he will not accept it. His soul has a great future.”

You can rest assured how happy we were all made at these words and I know you will be also. During my first interview with the Beloved on November 18^th He again spoke of your parents after I had said that I was especially blessed in having parents who made it possible for me to serve in the Cause, while yours did not, having in mind our conversation in Washington before we parted. He spoke about their need of change and said the first thing necessary for them was capacity. I was unable to get his words on the subject but I know and feel sure that your prayers in their behalf will be answered.

The Master spoke of many matters which you will be happy to know about and I am anticipating our next meeting with much joy. He cleared up for us all doubts about the war and violation and impressed upon us that the greatest need in America was the reorganization of the Cause on a spiritual basis, as it is in Persia. He longs for the real Baha’i Unity to be established in America and I know that you will find Harry a wonderful soul for this work.

We have practically all of the Master’s words to us at the various meetings, thanks to the tireless devotion of Lotfullah Hakim, and we have planned to get them out in an attractive little book. We have all been working on it during the passage and I will probably remain in Boston for a week or so until it is finished. I have no plans after that.

The Master wishes me to engage in some occupation but to spend the major part of my time in service in the Cause, and he wants me to work in America. Can you suggest one? When I said that some time I hoped to be permitted to go and visit the Eastern friends, He replied: “Very good. When you go there you should not go alone. It is better to go with a party of four or five so that it will produce a great effect there. When a group of friends go to Persia it will produce great results there.” So you see you cannot go without me.

Well old man, I see no immediate prospects in the matrimonial line for either of us for the present so I wish you the current joys of your season and hope to see you soon. My love and greetings to your parents and family and all the friends,

I know this is healing for all wounds received from the ignorant and will make you very very happy.
